OUR WASTE MANAGEMENT PROJECTS ALONG THE MALGAS RIVER

Waste management has been a major part of this project and educating people on more efficient ways of dealing with inorganic waste materials so that pollution does not consistently end up in our precious ecosystems. There is certainly a lack of environmental awareness and general education - people genuinely don’t seem to understand that pollution negatively affects the river and we are still today dealing with illegal dumping of anything from building rubble to black bags filled with all sorts of waste along the river bank which almost immediately changes the fauna present along these river banks.

Waste management consists of the following:
  • Management of inorganic waste & monitoring sewage or grey water overflow and assisting through overflow filtering systems.

  • Waste management has been an important part of this project, in particular educating people on more efficient ways of dealing with non-organic waste materials so that it does not end up in our precious ecosystems.

  • We deal with the inorganic waste along the river to make those involved aware of the health risks associated with pollution in our river systems.

  • We have separate buckets and bags for collecting goods, such as reusables, compostables, recyclables, single use plastics for eco bricks and glass and plastic materials that cannot be reused.

Who has been involved with waste management events thus far:
Blanco community - especially the children, Botanical Society, Botanical Gardens of the Garden Route, Landmark Foundation, George Municipality, Garden Roots Project & many helpful citizens of the Garden Route

ABOUT US

Respect the River project focusses on having a positive impact on the Malgas river located in the Garden Route. Focus is put on finding businesses or citizens to collaborate with for the restoration work to be done properly. Funding is essential to cover the costs of: sourcing and planting indigenous trees with compost  and mulch, tools and labor to continuously be doing exotic clearing and event costs for river clean ups with educational events that we host along the Malgas River.
